How is a breast lift performed?
Breast lift surgery involves removing excess skin and tissue and reshaping the appearance of the breasts. The nipples are also repositioned to a more youthful point. Some patients can combine their breast lift with implant surgery for a more enhanced contour. The specific techniques used depend on your goals, and are discussed during your initial consultation.
Is the operation painful?
Breast lift surgery is most often performed under general anaesthesia, so you will not feel any pain. Depending on your specific circumstances, Dr Norris can also perform the operation under local anaesthesia combined with a sedative. Post-operative pain can be controlled with medication.
How long does it take to recover from breast lift surgery?
You should be up and about approximately two days after surgery, but Dr Norris recommends that you take it easy for at least one week. You should be able to return to work approximately 10 days after your operation. A full recovery may take several months.
Will I lose feeling in my breasts following the operation?
While it is possible, it is very unusual to lose feeling in the breasts after breast lift surgery because new, advanced techniques preserve the nerves in the breast. In fact, most patients report a heightened pleasurable sensation in the nipple area after the operation.
Will I still be able to breastfeed after the procedure?
Because the ducts used for breastfeeding are preserved during the operation, you should be able to breastfeed after surgery. In fact, most women are able to breastfeed after the procedure. The remaining five percent would likely not have been able to breastfeed whether they had the surgery or not due to other factors.
What will my resulting scars look like after my breast lift?
After surgery, your scars will be reddish in colour. They will fade to a light pink colour over the next six to nine weeks after surgery before fading to a silvery-white colour. You can improve the appearance of your scars by wearing tape over them. Also, wearing a sports bra over the first six weeks after breast lift surgery is recommended to help the breasts heal better and retain their new shape.
When can I begin exercising again after surgery?
You should be able to return to exercise gradually after surgery, with a return to brisk walking approximately two or three days following your breast lift operation and jogging approximately 10 days after the operation. However, it will take four to six weeks to be able to return to more vigorous activities such as swimming, tennis, and upper-body gym work.
